Welcome to the Rudloe and environs website.

Here you will find news, articles and photos of an area that straddles the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in north-west Wiltshire.

Contributions in the form of articles or photos are welcome. Even those with completely contrary views to mine!

Thanks to the website builder 1&1 and Rob Brown for the original idea.

Rudloescene now, in January 2014, has a sister, academic rather than anarchic, website about Box history here: http://www.boxpeopleandplaces.co.uk/

It contains thoroughly professional, well-researched articles about Box and its people.

Oak at Thorneypits in December 1999

Thorneypits was one of the sites (others were Rudloe, Boxfields and Westwells) of prefabs and hostels housing workers employed in the local, mainly underground, factories during wartime and beyond. The hostels were later used to house Eastern European refugees - a Ukranian acquaintance lived there in his youth. Thorneypits (now called, but then Thorny Pits) housed Hungarian refugees following the 1956 uprising (see the Archive, Thorny Pits page here: Thorny Pits). Rumour has it that Joe Bugner was one of those refugees. Just three prefabs remain now.

What? What did we do? Whatever it was, it's causing great interest. This is Thorneypits at the turn of the century.

The 2015 pictures above, of oilseed rape at Thorneypits (and Fiveways), are perhaps a tad bland so let's see some more dramatic pictures taken 18 years earlier, in May 1997.
